The Sex Pissed Dolls @ Newcastle 02 Academy 17th April 2015

April 17, 2015

The craziest gig I’ve been to in years and it was totally amazing even though grown men were pogoing around, arms and drinks flying everywhere it was great fun and really can’t wait to see this awesome group again.

Yes The Sex Pissed Dolls, remember the name… they are blowing through the country like a wild hurricane. Evidently growing in popularity most notable was the amount of photographers in attendance than is normal here upstairs. It’s hard to believe they have only been going since being formed a year ago but what natural great entertainers and talented musicians these girls are.

Before the show started I took a shot of ‘our’ Dean’s tattoo on his arm, his permanent memento of all 5 band members, a proper ‘barmy bugga’ of the Dolls Barmy Army, who told me how good these girls were and he wasn’t joking. From the first chords from a lone Connie Rotter’s guitar the rest of the group walked on stage, Anna Key (drums), Jilly Idol (Bass), Kitty Vacant (Guitar) and finally the cute raucous Nancy (Vocals), then they were off straight into Pretty Vacant. Hold onto your hats boys and girls…

From there the atmosphere in the small confines of the Academy 2 venue grew and grew, floors literally bouncing beneath us, although Nancy did ask the sound engineer at one point to turn the audience up! She knew how to handle a rowdy crowd alright and claimed to be born in Ashington (just up the road), her Geordie cousin was in the crowd although she admitted she can’t speak funny ‘like you Geordies’. The setlist was an incredible mix from the Pistols, Clash, etc. up to the modern classic I Predict a Riot. Well there was evidently going to be a riot on as their performance overran after the 10pm curfew but some gentle persuasion and common sense from the venue officials allowed just one more song as an encore to keep the natives appeased.

One word to describe the show? Awesome!
