The Smoke Fairies were support act to Public Service Announcement (PSB) at the Riverside tonight and their set started in front a very sizeable crowd which was pleasing to see. This 5 piece band, fronted by two delightful singer guitarists in sparkling silver dresses. The drummer was almost hidden in the very tight confines of available stage space just behind the other two guys, on bass and keyboards, who resembled 70’s cop show actors or the 118 characters, as was heard around. Katherine and Jessica ooze coolness and their voices complement each other in their slightly different styles. It’s interesting to note that the girl’s harmonies feature on the PSB track Valentina hence why I’m guessing they were invited to support this UK tour.
Their sound can be moody and atmospheric, sophisticated with a steady driving rhythm at times. There’s little conversation between tracks and a little fine tuning of instruments, with Katherine taking a sup from her beer bottle, then straight into it again. There are highlights like the up tempo Hotel Room.
Eclipse Them All is a wonderful song, a must listen, a well-constructed tune with great melody and Floyd like guitar I just had to download it after the show, I loved it that much.
Jessica took to the keyboard for a brief spell, for another the keyboard player (sorry I don’t know the names) appeared to be playing the violin with his mouth, great stuff.
I would recommend anyone to make the effort listen to their excellent version of The Cult classic She Sells Sanctuary on Soundcloud.
All in all, a very competent set and their future can only be bright.
